Theme
Theme is overall message or lesson that an author wants readers to understand.
To identify theme, look for details in the actions and words of the characters.
To figure out the theme, think about what the characters do and say.

Root Words
A root word is the simplest form of a word.
A root word is a word to which no prefixes, suffixes, or endings have been added.
Use the meanings of root words to figure out unknown words.
